Chapter Nine
No sooner had the chime of the bell rang throughout the garden did the king charge forward and tackle Luka like a football player. The breath whooshed out of my man and he was knocked backward. The king tried to crawl on top of him and pin him down, but Luka pulled his legs back and then kicked out. His feet connected with the kingâs chest and he went flying, causing the crowd to gasp. King Constantine landed gracefully on his feet, the grass bunching up behind his heels as he skidded backward.
Luka kicked up into a standing position, facing the king, and both of the men grinned.
It was game on. They ran at each other terrifyingly fast. With a loud crack they bashed into each other and started throwing punches.
The thuds of fists smacking flesh filled the yard. I winced as blood flew left and right. Luka dodged a few, but the king was getting some really good hits on his face.
Donât hurt his beautiful face!
With a burst of energy, Luka struggled out of the kingâs hold and zoomed to the side. His cheek was bloodied and bruised and the crowd cheered wildly.
âYes!â the king shouted at the sky like a maniac, laughing as blood dripped from his nose.
âHeâs losing it. Heâll be a mad king within a year,â Luka stated.
Luka charged forward and the king kicked out, landing a foot squarely on Lukaâs chest. I heard the bones in Lukaâs ribs crack from here as my man went flying across the garden.
Bastard!
I stood, rushing forward without thinking, but a hand grasped my wrist and yanked me back before I could make it into the ring.
I looked behind me with a glare. It was Tink. He was bloodied yet healing. He shook his head slightly and then removed his hand from my wrist.
I sucked in a few breaths, trying to calm myself.
That bastard just broke Lukaâs ribs, but Tink was right. I couldnât intervene.
The king let loose another maniacal laugh, then Luka charged out of nowhere, a blur as he burst from the garden hedge and tackled the king to the ground.
Breathing a little easier, I stepped back into the shadows to stand beside the werewolf fighters, and a mix of fey and witch.
If it looked like Luka was losing, I was going to stop this. I no longer trusted this crazy king to end the fight before someone got killed.
Luka was able to pin the king beneath his arms and rain blow after blow onto his face and chest while the king cackled maniacally and did little to fight back.
âHe wants to die?â I observed.
âHe likes pain. Iâve been there,â Luka answered, and chills ran up my arms.
Luka slowed his punches, probably realizing he could actually kill him at this point, or that it was getting to be more than just a friendly fight, and the king burst upward, bucking Luka off.
Luka fell to the side, but also forward in an awkward position and slammed his face onto the mat.
